Frank Sanchez: There is No Other Heavyweight Like Me

Barclays Center, Brooklyn - Rising heavyweight Frank Sanchez (15-0, 11 KOs) scored a 10-round unanimous decision over Joey Dawejko (20-8-4, 11 KOs) to remain unbeaten.

"I was well prepared and I thought I fought very well tonight," said Sanchez. "I dominated the fight. I showed good footwork and movement and did exactly what we worked on. I expected a lot of pressure, but with my boxing ability, there was no way he was going to catch me."

The Cuban fighter dominated with his movement, rarely being flustered by Dawejko's attack as he bounded around the ring and avoided the incoming Philadelphia native. Sanchez was also superior in punch output and accuracy, out throwing Dawejko 352 to 242 and out landing him by a 116 to 46 margin. MORE

FRANK SANCHEZ LOOKS TO STAND OUT ON CROWDED STAGE OF YOUNG HEAVYWEIGHTS

Back when HBO still showed boxing, their “Night of the Young Heavyweights” specials were among the most anticipated programs they’d offer. Setting aside the one stroke of irony, that the fighters on the two cards who lost by early knockouts (John Ruiz, Davaryll Williamson, Shannon Briggs) ended up having better careers than their conquerors, the interest in these cards was that they brought a crop of young fighters together on the same stage for a big TV audience eager to see who was coming up on the horizon to claim what was once considered the richest prize in all of sports.

This Saturday’s PBC on Fox card headlined by Adam Kownacki against former title challenger Robert Helenius looks like a card that could very well have been that series’ third installment. Aside from the undefeated Polish favorite Kownacki, who has consistently drawn big crowds at the Barclays Center in Brooklyn, there is Nigerian prospect Efe Ajagba and a Cuban heavyweight named Robert Alfonso, all in separate bouts.

Frank Sanchez (14-0, 11 knockouts) says it’s his goal to stand out as the most impressive. MORE

Cuban phenom David Morrell Jr., now based in Minneapolis, will make this an even more high-stakes night for the city’s boxing scene, as he fights for an interim title in just his third pro fight against tough unbeaten Lennox Allen. Charles Martin stops Gerald Washington in sixth round to earn IBF shot

Charles Martin will, at some point, get a shot to regain the IBF title he lost in 2016.

Charles Martin and Gerald Washington probably shouldn’t have been in an IBF heavyweight eliminator tonight, but they were, and Martin stopped Washington at 1:57 of the sixth round to earn a future shot at the belt he won and lost within 84 days in 2016.

Martin (28-2-1, 25 KO) didn’t do anything spectacular tonight, really, but he mostly controlled the pace and distance of the fight against Washington (20-4-1, 13 KO), looking to set up a big left hand. In the sixth round, the opening presented itself, he cracked Washington clean, and Washington went down. He did get up but was unsteady and stopped by referee Tony Weeks. MORE
Lucas Browne to make US debut vs Otto Wallin in Las Vegas on March 28

Australian puncher Lucas Browne has confirmed his Las Vegas debut is set for March 28 when the former ‘regular’ heavyweight champion battles Otto Wallin. ‘Big Daddy’ is on the comeback trail having suffered only the second loss of his career in 2019. The veteran got back to winning ways in November after being stopped by Dave Allen in London. Browne, 40, blasted out John Hopoate in two rounds and is now rejuvenated. “March 28, I make my USA debut. Fighting Otto Wallin in Las Vegas,” Browne stated this weekend. Seeking a bigger test, Browne received an offer from Wallin, who himself is making a return from suffering a reverse. Wallin lost to Tyson Fury back in September despite seemingly being on the verge of gaining doctor intervention to claim victory. Fury was cut badly. Cornerman Jorge Capetillo worked wonders on the gash to preserve Fury’s undefeated record. Going down wide on the cards, the Swede lost for the first time in his 21st contest. Despite hitting 20-1, the 29 year-old improved his reputation significantly. MORE

Murat Gassiev, Israil Madrimov Officially Added to Garcia-Vargas

Murat Gassiev will make his long-awaited Heavyweight debut against Jerry Forrest at Ford Center at The Star in Frisco, Texas on Saturday February 29, live on DAZN in the US and on Sky Sports in the UK – with rising Junior-Middleweight star Israil Madrimov in a World title eliminator and headline star Mikey Garcia showcasing two of his Garcia Promotions talents.

Gassiev (26-1 19 KOs) announced his move to Heavyweight in April after signing a promotional deal with Eddie Hearn’s Matchroom Boxing USA, Ural Boxing and Warriors Boxing to fight on DAZN, following hot on the heels of his old Cruiserweight foe Oleksandr Usyk, the last man he faced in an undisputed World title clash and the final of the World Boxing Super Series in July 2018.

Guillermo Rigondeaux Wins Decision over Liborio Solis in Move to Bantamweight

The Cuban veteran showed no signs of the weight bothering him as he moved down at age 39.

By Scott Christ@scblh

Guillermo Rigondeaux’s tenure as an action fighter is over, ending after a single fight in 2019, but the 39-year-old Cuban kept his career plenty alive tonight, scoring a split decision win that shouldn’t have been over Liborio Solis in a move down to bantamweight.
Our live coverage for Russell vs Nyambayar continues here!
The win nets Rigondeaux (20-1, 13 KO) the secondary WBA “world” bantamweight title, but don’t be confused here; Naoya Inoue is the WBA bantamweight titleholder, and this is just a belt they handed out because the WBA does that.

Still, Rigondeaux didn’t appear to have any problems whatsoever with conditioning dropping down to 118 for the first time at an advanced age, and while it was unquestionably a boring fight — or one for rocket surgeon geniuses, depending on whom you ask — it was Rigondeaux back to what he does best: freezing opponents and nicking round after round. WBSS Cruiserweight Final Between Yunier Dorticos, Mairis Briedis Scheduled

After being bogged down by sanctioning body issues that delayed the second-season final of the World Boxing Super Series cruiserweight tournament for months, the fight has been scheduled.

Yunier Dorticos will defend his 200-pound world title against former two-time world titlist Mairis Briedis on March 21 (DAZN), with the Muhammad Ali Trophy also going to the winner, at the Arena Riga in Riga, Latvia, Briedis' hometown, the World Boxing Super Series announced Friday.

The fight, however, will not be a title unification bout as originally intended. That is because Briedis was stripped of his version of the world title by the WBO in late November. MORE

Dereck Chisora vs Artur Szpilka set for Whyte-Rivas card

Another heavyweight clash is added to Matchroom’s July 20 bill.

Dereck Chisora and Artur Szpilka are set to meet on July 20, as the heavyweights will be part of a big night in the division at London’s O2 Arena, with Dillian Whyte vs Oscar Rivas headlining, and Dave Allen vs David Price also set.

We still don’t know if this card is going to air on DAZN or not, but it is set for Sky Box Office in the UK.

Chisora (30-9, 21 KO) is a 35-year-old heavyweight veteran at this point in his career, but he’s still a legitimate fringe contender. In 2018, he beat Zakaria Azzouzi and Carlos Takam via stoppage, then in December, he was highly competitive with Whyte in their rematch, leading on two of three cards after 10 rounds before Whyte knocked him out in the 11th.

In his last outing on April 20, Chisora was able to rather sleepily win a 10-round decision over Senad Gashi in a pretty miserable fight where Gashi didn’t want to engage at all, and Chisora, working with new trainer Dave Coldwell, was trying to box more.

This is my second chance and I will do my best to complete it. I wouldn’t use the word ‘war’ about the fight like Krzysztof. WBA super lightweight champion Kiryl Relikh (23-2, 19 KOs) believes WBC diamond beltholder Regis Prograis (23-0, 19 KOs) is ‘in for a surprise’ in their WBSS super-lightweight semi-final on Saturday at the Cajundome in Lafayette, Louisiana.

Relikh, who is training in Miami, defeated Russia’s tricky Eduard Troyanovsky by a unanimous decision, with all judges scoring it 115-113 in favor of the ‘Mad Bee’, to reach the semi-final.

What is your assessment of your performance against Troyanovsky?

The 25-year-old is moving up from cruiserweight where he landed the IBF world title in June 2016 after beating Denis Lebedev in Moscow, defending it with a third round KO of Krzysztof Wlodarczyk in New Jersey in December 2017 in the quarter-final of the World Boxing Super Series and then adding the WBA crown with a dramatic final round stoppage of Yunier Dorticos in February 2018.

That victory led Gassiev to a final with Oleksandr Usyk for the undisputed cruiserweight title, which Usyk won over the distance. Gassiev has mirrored the moves of Usyk by going up in weight and teaming up with Matchroom Boxing USA.

“I’ve watched a lot of his (Vlasov’s) fights together with my coach and we have tactics ready,” said 32-year-old Glowacki (30-1, 19 KOs).  “Of course, he does have a lot of weak points but he also has a lot of strengths.
